President of the St. Kilda Football Club, Rod "Western Star" Butterss has told former coach Grant Thomas to pull his head in and stop talking to current Saint players. Thoams for his part denies talking to players. In Diggers opinion, Thomas is still in denial over last years sacking. Maybe all the talk is to take the heat of coach and players who have been playing like dogs.
Nathan Buckley is injured again and we may have seen the last of him. No more FIGJAM in the AFL, a sad day.
Australian media and the public in general are saying what Digger has been saying for ages. The AFL web site is a heap of shit. Digger, ahead of his time.
This week, retired champion, Brownlow winner and coach in waiting Michael Voss, along with current Brisbane Lion and fellow Brownlow winner Simon Black and noted headline grabber Fraser Gehrig have been issued summonses for,
Voss - unlawful assault
Black - recklessly causing injury and assault by kicking
Gehrig - unlawful assault
Former Lion and Saint and noted bad boy, Stephen Laurence takes the cake being charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury and 2 counts of unlawful assault. Some Neville Nobody has also been charged.
A couple of upset wins, the first draw of the season and 2 blow outs highlighted the changing face of AFL this season. And looking at the scores last week an interesting pattern emerges. To Digger it looks like 13 goals (78 points) will win you most games. Let us follow this closely over the next few weeks.
Collingwood 103 defeated Fremantle 94
Melbourne 89 defeated Adelaide 72
West Coast 121 defeated Kangaroos 55
Richmond 73 drew with Brisbane 73
Sydney 73 lost to  Essendon 74
Port Adelaide 75 lost to Hawthorn 109
Carlton 138 defeated Western Bulldogs 128
St. Kilda 65 lost to Geelong 125
First premiership points of the season to Richmond for their draw and Melbourne with a stirring win over Adelaide. Check out Diggers tips from last week.
The main talking point this week is the contentious hands in the back rule and Digger will look at this further next week as the mail bag is full of letters about this rule.
A quick look at this weeks round of matches.
Firstly we see West Coast traveling to Victoria to meet Essendon at the Telstra Dome. The Weagles have lost on their last 2 journeys east and will be eager to inflict pain against the ‘Dons. The key to this game is the battle between Bomber full forward Matthew Lloyd and the best full back in the business Darren "Handle with Care" Glass. Holding Lloyd puts enormous pressure on the other Bomber forwards. To me, West Coast just look too strong over all and will win by about 4 goals.
The surprise of the season so far Hawthorn take on Sydney at the ‘G on Saturday with the Swans going like the proverbial brides nightie. The Swans have been in a habit of belting the Hawks in recent seasons but the Hawks appear to have arrived. Spida Everitt back against one of his former teams will be keen for a win but for Digger the hawks to keep on their roll.
Disappointing is the word common to both Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs so far in 2007. The only thing that the Bulldogs have collected in spades this year are frequent flier points having traveled to Darwin, Canberra and this week Brisbane. Western Bulldogs with the scores being 73 to 81.
Just to repeat myself again, the AFL web site is an absolute disgrace.
It is all in the head this game of football. Before last weeks clash, Carlton coach Denis Pagan told the press that he hoped his teams match with the Bulldogs would not be a blow out loss as they had suffered numerous close losses and he did not know if his team was mentally tough enough to handle it. Instead of a blow out it was a shoot out and the Blues kicked arse. This would normally see Digger predicting a loss this week but I reckon that Port Adelaide are that weak that Carlton will win again.
Last time they met, the Ravens defeated Geelong by 15 goals at AAMI Stadium the same venue for this weeks clash. How times have changed. During the off season the Cats poached Adelaide's fitness coach. For the entire 2006 season Geelong kicked 590 points in time on but in 10 games of 2007 they have kicked 418 already. Is it a coincidence that the Ravens have a long injury list this year? Adelaide's fill in ruck man Ben Hudson will have his hands full and who is going to kick Adelaide's goals? Pussies to win.
Matthew Pavlich and Chris Tarrant between them will kick more than the total of all Richmond players. Fremantle to kick the sweep and another dirty day at the office for the Tiger's.
The Kangaroos six match winning streak came to an abrupt end last week but they do face the dysfunctional St. Kilda this week which may be the tonic they need to return to the winners list. Here Digger is predicting one of those 13 goal wins so expect the scores to be in the 70 - 80 point mark with the ‘Roos saluting while Fraser Gehrig gets reported for whacking Michael "Banana" Firrito.
And so onto Monday the day on which Australia, even the republicans, celebrate the Queens Birthday. Melbourne and Collingwood, Demons and Magpies, blue bloods and working class are some of the descriptions used to describe these 2 teams. I call them disappointing and mongrels respectively. Collingwood continue to win and the Dee's are now on the board. Collingwood need to plan their match ups well with Neitz and Robertson being their main concerns. Shane O'Bree will be the main tagger for Collingwood a job he does well. Digger sees Melbourne continuing their winning "streak".
Apart from Collingwood, what other team did his father play for and what was his name.
