It's back!!!!!!!! The first round of the 2007 AFL season kicks off this Friday night and after all the drama of the off season Digger is itching to see some real action.
Best joke heard this week is that the West Coasts and their major sponsor, the fast food chain Hungry Jacks, have introduced the Ben Cousins Meal Deal. No burgers or fries just coke and ice. Nice one.
Let's have a look at this weeks games.
Friday night sees Melbourne taking on St. Kilda. Back soreness will keep key Saint forward Nick Riewoldt out of the game which is a big blow for the team and for Digger who has him in his Super Coach team. Melbourne are always early stars of the season and Digger reckons this will be the case again. The Demons to win in a close one.
Collingwood take on the Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon and Digger is tipping that the ‘Roos will finish near the rear of the ladder. This clash at the G should be a close affair as Digger reckons the magpies over achieved last season and will finish out of the finals in 2007. Another close won with the Collingwood team scraping in.
Also on Saturday afternoon but across the country in the West, Fremantle hosts the boys from Port Adelaide. All the pundits including Digger see the Freo team having a grand season and after a summer avoiding the spot light they will be keen to start out the season strongly. Fremantle to win easily.
Saturday night and we are off to Brisbane where the Lions take on Hawthorn. Brisbane came second in the pre-season NAB cup and coach Leigh Matthews will be keen to beat the team that he was a champion for. Hawthorn should improve this year but it will be a losing start to the year and in this match the Brisbane team will prevail.
Who can forget last years Grand Final where the Weagles won a close one over the Sydney Swans. Well on Saturday night they clash again and another close one is assured. The Weagles have made the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the break but they are still a team chock of block with talent and will push the Sydney team. The Swans have been slow starters in previous seasons but should have enough fire power and motivation to overcome the West Coast this Saturday night. Swannies in a close one.
Sunday afternoon and the boys from Essendon travel to Adelaide to take on the Ravens. The Ravens ruck stocks are low and this maybe where the Bombers have an advantage. However this advantage will not be enough to overcome the Adelaide team who will be keen to go one step further this year and make the Grand Final. Too much speed and an edge in class will see the Ravens home.
A huge clash on Sunday afternoon at the Telstra Dome between the Western Bulldogs and the 2006 under achievers Geelong. The dogs are one of the quickest teams in the league and Geelong will be hard pressed to keep up. Last season these two teams clashed twice with each taking a one point win. It will not be as close in this one and Digger see the Western Bulldogs will win by about 4 goals.
The last match of round one sees the battle of the wooden spoon early in the season. While the Blues may have won the pre-season Cup Digger fails to see them making much headway in this season proper. Against this is the fact that the Tigers do not seem to have improved much from 2006 and have injury worries already. This clash is really a toss of the coin decision but maybe the Blues momentum will have them taking the chocolates. Digger is tipping the first drawn game of the season in a match that will have no impact on the 2007 season.
No letters in Diggers letter box this week so get on the keyboard and start punching out your enquiries on this great game.
More next week.
