AFL 2007 Round 14

I feel a little crazy

I feel a little strange

Like I'm in a pay ‘phone

Without any change

I feel a little edgy

I feel a little weird

I feel like a school boy

Who's grown a beard

I'm livin' in the 70's

Eatin' fake food under plastic trees

My face gets dirty just walkin' around

I need another pill to calm me down

Lyrics - G. Macainish

Round 14, 2007 is the heritage round and a celebration of footy in the ‘70's.  What do you miss about the ‘70's?  Digger misses white dog turds on the footpaths, football played on muddy grounds and that great Sunday tradition of watching World of Sport while eating the Sunday roast.  Ah, fond memories indeed and Digger even had his first root in the 1970's.

Tell Digger what you miss about the seventies with the best winning a prize.  diggerafl@yahoo.com.au

Last week Digger tipped all his selections to win by three goals and was not let down by Geelong, St. Kilda and let's throw in the Kangaroos.  And emotions did run riot.

With 6 seconds remaining in the clash between Essendon and Melbourne, Essendon's Scott Lucas scrambled a goal to give the ‘Dons a deserved 2 point win and spoil Neale Daniher's farewell as coach.  That was one of Lucas' 5 goals and Matthew Lloyd kicked 4.

Geelong were looking to continue their winning run when Sydney traveled to Kardinia Park last Saturday.  Wintry conditions prevailed and the quote of the day came from boundary rider Andrew Maher.  His quote "... and it is wet rain too".  The Cats kicked away and at three quarter time it looked how far however the Swans finally got cracking and drew within 3 straight kicks before Geelong match winners Gary Ablett and Steve Johnson both kicked goals that only freakish players can.  The Geelong team prevailed by 3 goals.

How blue are the Blue's.  Carlton was crunched by more than 12 goals in their match against Fremantle at Subiaco.  Jeff Farmer kicked 4 goals in his return from a club suspension for head butting a night club bouncer.  Pavlich in fine form again and not much can be said about the Carlton team except that Fev has been told by management to take a week off and consider his future.

In a match that Digger did not see, Brisbane with a spirited last quarter comeback almost got the Port Power total but failed by 7 points.  A 7 goal straight final quarter but you cannot win playing just one quarter.  Justin Westhoff continues to shine in his debut season.

In contrast, Richmond seem to play each game for 3 quarters and still find a way to throw it away in the final stanza.  And that was the case again last week with St. Kilda having the best of them to run out 3 goal winners.  A great way to celebrate the 351st game for stalwart Robert Harvey.

The West Coast continued to be the bogey team for the Adelaide Ravens when they beat them by 21 points at Adelaide's AAMI Stadium.  The Weagle forward line of Jones, Seaby and Le Cras kicked 3 apiece while the Ravens shared their majors around.  Daniel Kerr and Dean "Big" Cox were the dominant players on the ground.

The Kangaroos celebrated both on and off the field after their 26 point win over the Western Bulldogs.  Glen Archer's 300th game for the Shinboners was the inspiration behind the win and it was a veterans effort all round with Harvey and Simpson among the best.  However the highlight of the game was Drew Petrie's 6 goal first quarter.  The Bulldogs need  a win quick.

Digger did not see this game either but from all reports it was a ripper.  Hawthorn defeated Collingwood by 8 points at the Dome in a game that was close all day.  Hawthorn do appear to be a real danger this year and have a team that does not rely on one or 2 superstars but shares the responsibility amongst the team.  Collingwood should also take solace from this effort as they will help shape the top 8 on the ladder this season.

LETTER OF THE WEEK

Digger has just been informed that he has won a million euros in the Spanish lottery.  Ye, fuckin' ha.

Seriously though, here we go.

Dear Dig,

I read the article on the ‘70's football by Tom Hafey on the AFL website this week.  I think you should print the answer to his first question to show those new to the game what the game was like in the ‘70's

Regards,

R. Sart - Richmond

Dear Mr. Sart,

Q: What was the best thing about football in the '70s?
Tommy Hafey:
I think the camaraderie and the passion; everyone played for each other. I know that we've got very classy and talented players now, but we probably haven't got any players playing at the club they want to be at because you've got no say in it.

We had a lot of functions aimed at keeping the players together. You played on your home ground and you had a big chance of winning your home games because the supporters would be fanatical about you; the '70s were a good time.

Rivalries were very strong in that particular period because they were all still suburban clubs, so when you went to an away ground, it was always going to be a hard, tough match; you knew you were going to be in for a hell of a fight.

Can Essendon catch Geelong on the hop this Friday night.  The Cats had another torrid afternoon last week with quite a few players suffering minor injuries and a couple of major ones.  Essendon continues to surprise this year but will miss the suspended Matthew Lloyd.  Matthew Scarlett should play on Lucas and the Bomber will have to be aware of the Cat backman venturing forward.  Digger says the Essendon team to give Geelong a wake up call with a narrow win.

Collingwood should bounce back to the winners list when they inflict a defeat on St. Kilda.  Although the Saints are due to get some of their better players back from injury so are the ‘Pies and the ‘Pies are playing the better football.  Alan "pistol" Didak needs to play a big game to get supporters of all clubs off his back after his date with infamy.  Anyone noticed that the Collingwood strip looks like an ancient prison outfit.  Collingwood in a close one.

Port Adelaide have had the wood on the Western Bulldogs since the Power entered the AFL and the Bulldogs really need to turn that around this week if they are to live up to their pre-season hype.  The Power will have an aerial supremacy with the ‘dogs having the running game to beat them.  As the game is being played in Melbourne Digger is going for the dog's and if they lose their season will have gone to the dogs.

West Coast host Brisbane in Perth Saturday night and with the imminent return of Ben Cousins the Weagles will be cock-a-hoop.  Dean "Big" Cox will give his great mid fielders first use of the ball and with their newly restructured forward line they should kick this weeks sweep.  The big clash will be Darren Glass up against Jonathon Brown but the Lions do not have enough goal scorers.  Weagles in a canter.

A cracker of a game is expected when the hawthorn boys travel to AAMI Stadium to take on the Adelaide Ravens.  The ravens have been up and down like the proverbial brides nighty while the Hawks continue to astound.  The Ravens struggled for goal kickers last week while the Maybloomers have many options including Lance "Buddy" Franklin and Jarryd "don't use your teeth" Roughhead.  The Hawks travel well so Digger says dig deep and get on.

The disappointing Sydney team really need a win to get their finals aspirations back on track while equally the same applies to the Mentals.  The Swans to get the points according to Digger.

Carlton host Melbourne and the way the Blues are traveling the Demons should post their third win of the season.  Who is going to kick the goals for the Carlton team?  No Fevola, no Whitnall and no Eddie Betts really limits the options up forward.  Melbourne have enough in the tank to give their caretaker coach Mark Riley a first up victory.

In the upset of the round, Richmond will give the Kangaroos shit and post their second win of the season.  Do not ask me why but do not question my judgement and don't tell me about boats, I know all about boats.  Matt Richardson will have his kicking boots on this week and kick a bag while youngster Nathan Foley will continue to impress.  Tigers by 6 goals.

Tight shorts, mullets and big moustaches.  Ahhhhh, the seventies.

Digger
